If a child is eating or playing with a small toy and begins to choke, his air passage may be partially or completely blocked. Signs of a partially blocked air passage include choking or coughing that starts very suddenly, gagging, or breathing that is noisy and high pitched.

If a child can manage to breathe a little bit, call 911 or get her to an emergency room immediately. Trying to dislodge the object could end up making matters worse by cutting off the child's air completely. If a child's ability to breathe is almost completely cut off or if breathing has stopped altogether, the situation is desperate and the child must have immediate assistance to keep her alive until an emergency medical team arrives.

Symptoms of desperate trouble include:

The ribs and chest are sucked in when the toddler tries to breathe

The toddler can't get enough air to cough

The toddler can only wheeze softly or make soft high-pitched sounds

The toddler can't make any sound at all

The lips and skin are bluish
